How Long is Sex Offender Probation?

Usually between 10 to 25 years depending on the severity of the crime. For most sex crimes like possession of child pornography under C.G.S. § 53a-196, sexual assault under C.G.S. § 53a-71, and risk of injury under C.G.S. § 53-21(a)(2) for contact with intimate parts, sex offender probation is mandatory. There is usually a mandatory 10 year period of sex offender probation for these types of crimes, but can be modified after that with court permission.

What Kind of Restrictions are Placed on Sex Offenders?

In addition to the general probation restrictions and requirements (such as no out-of-state travel and random drug testing), sex offenders are required to undergo an intense sex offender evaluation and follow treatment recommendations, no matter how rigorous. They are also prohibited from having contact with the victim, must register publicly or confidentially on the state’s sex offender registry for at least 10 years, and must take annual lie detector tests which assists probation in determining whether you have been complying with all probation rules and conditions.

Can a Sex Offender Get Off Probation Early?

It’s possible. Connecticut General Statutes C.G.S. § 53a-33 allows for early termination of probation after a hearing and for good cause shown except for probation imposed for a conviction of sexual assault in the first, second, and third degree, aggravated first degree sexual assault, and risk of injury to a minor involving contact with intimate parts.

Other crimes that are eligible for early termination of sex offender probation are: voyeurism, possession of child pornography, and enticing a minor. But in order to get off probation early with convictions of these crimes, you and your top Connecticut criminal defense attorney must show “good cause” to the court.

What is Good Cause for Early Termination of CT Sex Offender Probation?

Good cause can be one or more of any of the following: sex offender counseling, victim support, employment hardship, community service, or health, medical or travel hardships.
