Typically, after a first or second time DUI/DWI conviction in the State of Connecticut, your license will be suspended for one years or longer. In some cases you can reduce this suspension by installing an ignition interlock device in your vehicle.
An ignition interlock device (IID) is a breath alcohol measurement device that is connected to the ignition system of your vehicle. Before you can start a vehicle with an IID, you must blow a breath sample into the device. If your breath exceeds the limit of the device, then the vehicle will not start.
If you have a suspended license after a first or second DUI / DWI conviction, then you might qualify for an IID restricted license. The first step is serving the first part of your required license suspension without incident. After that point, you may apply with the court for an IID license. If the court determines that you qualify, then you must then purchase and install the IID on your primary vehicle.
Your license will indicate that the IID is required and you will be in violation if you drive a vehicle without the device. After 24 months driving successfully with the IID, you can petition the court to have full driving privileges restored.
If your license is currently suspended after a first or second drunk driving conviction, contact The Law Office of Mark Sherman to discuss your options with an ignition interlock device. We will help you determine if making an application makes sense in your case.
